Cory King took his kids fishing and had a great story to go along with it:
I had the opportunity to join a 6-6 charter yesterday on the Point Loma with a friend of mine and his family. I took my son Walker, his friend Remi, and my youngest daughter Holland. It was the first time ocean fishing for Holland and Remi. They were both super excited, but super nervous.
It was a typical day of BFT fishing, lots of frustrating foamers and no biters. The boat fished hard, and managed to scratch out just two 60lb class fish…and they both came home with us. 😁. There might have been some hook/hand action by dad going on, but they nailed the rest…lol..😉
Since I know you like details…Holland landed hers in about 15 minutes (hooked deep, fish came in pretty quick) on an 80g Katy Perry colt sniper cast from the bow, that got hit about 10 seconds into the sink after we watched a foamer sink out, 40# mono with 40# seagaur blue label leader for abrasion, Trinidad 40 reel on 700h graphiter.
Remi got his, hooked out of the same school, 5 mins after H landed hers, on a fly lined sardine with a #2 circle hook, 40# seagaur flouropremier leader, and 40# mono. The rig was the new Speedmaster 12 that Rick set me up with this week, on an 800m graphiter. This was literally the first cast with the new reel!! The rod was a bit overmatched, but I LOVED the reel! Stands up to all the accolades you guys give it! Fish came to gaff in about 45 minutes. The low gear put the hurt on for the last 50 feet once it was straight up/down.
My son wasn’t lucky enough to hook up this trip, but watching him work hard to get bit “because I want to get one of these kids a fish to pull on, I’ve caught lots of fish, they need a chance!” made me so proud of him.
Yep, watching my son find joy in trying to help kids catch a fish, and then Holland’s and Remi’s wide eyes when they fought those fish and realized the power they were facing, their determination, their learning with every turn of the handle, and their exhausted elation when the fish finally hit the deck…well…that’s the best thing ever and the reason I fish! 😁. I love catching my own, but if I never land another fish on my own, and just get to have that experience with others, I’m happy!
I know mine are not little kids any more, but please remind everyone to take a kid fishing and make the focus on helping the kid have a good experience…you’ll never regret it. And if you are lucky, you’ll have fishing buddies who are begging to go again!
