On August 16th a group of 24 anglers joined Captain Tommy Rothery and crew for the annual Let’s Talk Hookup 4 day trip aboard the Polaris Supreme out of Fisherman’s Landing on San Diego bay. Getting everybody, the equipment and a load of bait on board went smoothly and we set out on a beautiful San Diego day. The water w
as very enjoyable, especially since the inland temperatures were well over 100 degrees.

From the previous trip, and the current reports, yellowtail seemed to be the target species.Tommy took us on an overnight run down the Baja coastline to the Cabo Colonet area. The first full day of fishing did not disappoint. We had a solid day of non stop action on a nice grade of 15-25 pound fish. However, late that afternoon Tommy got a radio call that changed the whole game plan.
A boat reported that the yellowfin tuna were turning on just inside U.S. waters about 40 miles off Point Loma. We turned up north

and made the run back close to home. We spent the entire next day on a school of tuna that wanted to play. There was a steady bite all day long. And what a grade of fish. There was not a single fish brought in that weighed under 50 lbs. Most everything was in a 60-80 lb. weight range. There were no footballs in this school. This was the best quality tuna fishing I have ever been on this close to home.
I want to recognize one angler on this trip, Leslie McKenna. Leslie was out fishing with her Dad. It was so nice to see a father/ daughter team fishing together. This was Leslie’s first time ever on an ocean sport boat. Now, Leslie is a very petite young lady. All she did was put 3 of these bruiser tuna on the deck, including the number two jackpot fish, a 76 pounder. Way to go, Leslie.
I can’t say enough about the boat. Tommy Rothrey is a real professional captain. He made the right call and got us on the fish.The crew was top notch. There were very few casualties due to tangles. And they did a great job coaching the rookies like Leslie. And the galley turned out some fine meals including prime rib and fresh fish dishes.
