May 2019

Once again it’s the month of May and its time for me to be the
Chartermaster for the Let’s Talk Hookup trip on the Tony Reyes out of
San

Felipe, Mexico. Although the boat does not leave till noonish on
Sunday, I prefer to leisurely drive down on Friday. I find the Eastern
border crossing(hwy 7) a little easier to navigate as it goes around
Mexicalli instead of thru the busy city(hwy 111).
We steamed south to the Isla La Guarda arriving at 3 am, plenty of
time for the launching of the 22’ pangs. Immediately it was game on for
YT, pretty much all you wanted on the troll. Mirror lures, Rapalas, the
deep divers, in red/white, orange, and tiger stripe are the preferred
colors. The YT tend to be sm

aller at the beginning of the season, but
we still managed to put some in the hold weighing a solid 24 lbs.
Steaming south to San Lorenzo found the Cabrilla fishing to be
outstanding at times. Many of the pangs encountered schooling fish,
which I have not seen in a few years. I lost track of the number of times
all of us were hooked up at the same time. My Tranx 300 setup with a
40-60 gram Coltsniper in silver or silver/green worked best for me.
There were also grouper weighting 25, 26 and 28 lbs taken on the troll.
The big fish of the trip went to a longtime returning fisherman, it was a
140 lb Balck Sea Bass. There were also multiple species of fish caught.
This trip is called “Tony Reyes Fishing Tours”, why, because the
scenery is incredible as well as the fishing. Tony and his crew bend over
backwards to make sure
everyone has a great time. You won’t go
hungry either as there are three squares a day. Book with Longfin Tackle in
Orange, CA(714-538-9300) or check www.tonyreyes.com Our trip next year is 5/3-8, 2020. Book soon to secure your spot!
