All I can say is that if you have not experienced a trip with Cedros Island Sportfishing you are
missing the boat. Truly a “show up and blow up” adventure for twelve people max. The CBX
border crossing is a fun way to start the trip. The private chartered plane flies under 10,000
feet to the island, making the views down the Baja coast stunning.
Arrival time is around noon so a half day of fishing is an option at a nominal charge. Otherwise,
three full days of fishing follows. My buddy Kevin and I decided to target calico bass and day
one yielded us 405 checkers! Incredible angling on 6” – 7” MC swimbaits with 1 – 1.5 oz
weedless leadheads, 60-80 gm Shimano colt snipers, and Rapala 6” X-raps worked for us. Our
pangero captain, Martin, used his electronics on the super panga to locate the rock piles the
fish were stacked on. Dropping through the thick kelp beds was like fishing in a big aquarium.
On day one and day two (211 fish) we started from the fish camp and worked our way north of
Punta Colorado. Day three (147 fish) took us to the east side almost up to Ponte Norte.
Overall, we caught 763 Calico bass!! We were not the only ones on the trip that caught fish.
YT up to 42 lbs., a 74 lb. black sea bass and halibut up to 33 lbs. were landed. If you decide to
keep any of your fish it is filleted, vacuum sealed and frozen for the trip back. You need to
bring your own cooler for the fish transfer upon returning.
After your 5:30 AM breakfast you fish until 4 PM, with lunch provided on the boat (sandwiches,
burritos, drinks, etc.). Dinners are varied with some of the best pozole I have ever tasted. The
last night is usually steak night with ribeye steaks seasoned and cooked to perfection.
Accommodations are very comfortable two-person rooms with private bathrooms and there
are plenty of lounge

areas to enjoy your favorite libation. For a nominal fee you can have daily
laundry service so you can pack light. I cannot think of anything else you would need to add to
this adventure. And if you can, all you have to do is ask Rosie or any of the attentive staff and
they will make it happen.
